Hair Care

Hiii! Okay, answering all hair questions. But to start off, I just want to say I do not have extensions, it’s my real hair. I also do not get trims as often as I should – I know, not great of me :/

I wish I was better at going every six weeks, but I really only go maybe twice a year. I’m working on being better about it though!! I just don’t feel like my ends get thattt bad.  When I do go, I usually just get a dry cut because I like to be in and out.  When I go in for the full thing, I usually ask for one length with face-framing layers.

I literally don’t even have a go-to hair person because that is how little I go. I just pick whoever is available at Penzone and I also like J Salon for a quick, dry trim.

Anyways, here are all my tips for keeping my hair healthy:

  • I don’t color my hair which I think helps a lot. (side note: I was a camp counselor at an overnight camp for many summers and I used  Sun-In like everyday, which omg whyyyy and how my hair didn’t all fall out after that IDK) Anyways, a few years ago I did try sparkle lights (mini, super subtle highlights which I loved. I went to Elle when she was at Salon Lofts but now she has a salon called Copper & Ash in downtown Columbus) and I’ve done balayage which was meh – I just don’t know if it looks good with my skin color and it came out kind of orange. I think if you have dark hair you have to find someone who really knows their shit with taking dark to light.

  • Every now and then I’ll do an at-home gloss (I like the one from the Kristin Ess collection at Target) just to keep my natural color from getting dull + gives it a nice shine.

  • Eating well and supplements. I think eating healthy has such a big impact on your hair and skin. I’ve been told (by Google, so like do your own research but this is just what works for me) that these foods are good for your hair: eggs, berries, spinach and avocados.  Also, I like taking biotin and different vitamins (A, B, C, D and iron) to help with my hair too. I’ll also link the supplement I like below. P.S. I’m not a vitamin expert ok??? but this is what I take and what works for me – again, do your own research.

  • I try to avoid heat on my hair as much as possible.  I try to let it air dry unless I’m in a huge rush. I also try to only style my hair with my curler 1-2 times each week and that is only if I have to. I usually will do it once for the weekend and ride out the messy waves for as long as I can. I will say I like to use the Revlon Air Brush Dryer for an at-home blowout look. It’s probs not the best for your hair, but again I do it once and re-wear it for as long as I can.

  • I only wash my hair about twice a week. Most of my showers are body showers. When I wash my hair I tryyy to use paraben and sulfate free shampoos/conditioners for a more gentle cleanse. Besides that, I’m not picky about what shampoo/conditioners I use and it’s pretty much whatever I have in the shower. I also use dry shampoo to help my hair last between washes. I’ve been using this dry shampoo from Target – affordable and doesn’t leave white residue in your hair.

HOT TIP: use it BEFORE your work out so that it absorbs the sweat, rather than trying to use it on your hair when it’s “wet” from the sweat.

  • Olaplex No. 3 – I’ve been using this forever and it’s one of my faves. It helps with strengthening damaged hair and reconnecting broken bonds – great if you do get your hair colored. I usually do every two weeks.

  • Hair masks + hair oils – I love to use a mask before working out because Jen Atkins (aka the hair queen and founder of OUAI) says that the salt from sweat can dry your hair, so a mask before working out can help protect, plus the heat from the workout can make the mask work more effectively. I’ll link the ones I like below.

  • Scrunchies or those loopy/spiral ties for less breakage. I try to avoid the regular elastics unless I’m doing half up – high pony look.

  • Silk (or satin, because $) pillowcase to cause less friction and helps reduce bed head – aka your hairstyles can last longer aka less heat.

  • Scalp scrub (frank body one is my absolute fave) and/or apple cider vinegar rinse – love both to help remove build up from products.  I try to do once a week, but life gets in the way so maybe every two weeks.

Scalp scrub: I feel like helps with dandruff. I’m also big about treating your scalp the same way you treat your skin because like a healthy scalp = healthy hair IMO. If I do a scrub, I do scrub first then shampoo + conditioner so you can get all the scrub out.

If you use ACV, mix it with water and either use a fine-tip squeeze bottle or spray bottle from amazon or just mix in a cup + dump it on your head – do what you can, ya know? I usually do shampoo, ACV rinse (leave in for a few mins) then a light conditioner just at the ends of my hair.  If you have really dry hair, I would maybe skip the ACV.

I think that is it – sorry that was a lot.
