Weekend in Mallorca

If you’re into beautiful beaches, winding roads, mountain villages and coastal towns, then add Mallorca to you list of places to visit. The island of Mallorca (or Majorca) is the largest of the Balearic Islands and is filled with stunning scenery.

My boyfriend had a work trip in Barcelona, so we flew out a few days before he had to be there to explore the island.  This was a pretty last minute trip, so we didn’t plan too much in advance. We were only there for two nights and I wish we had stayed longer, but we were still able to do and see a lot.

How We Got There

We flew out on Fourth of July (adios, America!) and landed in London, where we spent the day. That evening we flew to Mallorca (Palma de Mallorca Airport), where we also picked up our rental car. I would deff recommend getting a car if you want to go to different areas of the island. It doesn’t take very long to get from one end of the island to the other, maybe an hour and half – two hours max.

Other options of transportation: so I don’t remember seeing many taxis. I believe there was some sort of bus/public transportation, but it seemed like having a car was the easiest way around.

Also, this island is a popular destination for cyclists, so I guess you could get around by bike….maybe.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at a hotel called Sentido Cala Viñas in Calvià It was about 30 minutes from the airport, on the southwest side of Mallorca. Our room had an amazing view from our balcony. The hotel overlooked the bay of Cala Viñas, which was a quiet and relaxing area. It was perfect for us since we wanted to be somewhere with less of a crowd.

BUT hey if you’re into Panama City Beach mixed with Jersey Shore kind of vibes, you can always take a quick drive to Magaluf, which was a much more psycho lively part of the island, filled with lots of (drunk) British teens on holiday.  I know this because we had the pleasure of experiencing it. We had landed very, very late on our first night and we were starving. Like the kind of hungry where I didn’t care what or where we ate, I just needed food ASAP or I was going to get bitchy. We also needed to find a place that was still open…which brought us to Magaluf. It was definitely an interesting experience. I would recommend avoiding that area unless you’re really trying to party. Even then I would say go to Palma for the night life. Thankfully the rest of the trip was much more dreamy and less chaotic.

What We Did

We did a lot of  driving around and exploring the beauty of the island. The weather was so perfect, mid to high 80s, sunny with a little bit of a breeze. We got very lucky, just two weeks after we were there they were hit with a mini-tsunami.

For our first day, we went to check out some different villages and beaches. We stopped in Valldemossa to get breakfast and then spent some time walking around since it was such a cute area. After that we just happened to drive by La Casa de Robert Graves (house of the writer/poet…tbh I didn’t know who he was, but loved his home) in Deiá and ended up pulling over to check it out.  It’s now a museum, so you can pay to go inside the house. We just walked around the garden, which was so so beautiful.

After that we got back in the car and started to drive to where we thought was Torrente De Pareis. From there we were going to go to Sa Calobra, which is a small beach between the mountains. But what do ya know, I relied on poor service and Apple maps, so instead we ended up at Port De Soller. Luckily the entire island is gorgeous, so it was still a nice, little detour. No complaints here.

when every route is the scenic route

We did eventually make it to Torrente De Pareis/Sa Calobra, which was so worth it. I’ve heard it’s a popular tourist spot,  but luckily it wasn’t super crowded when we went.  We had a little picnic on the beach, swam in the gorgeous, turquoise, picturesque water. Like it was perfect. Ugh starting to miss it now.

Later that night we had dinner in Palma Nova and then walked around the main strip in Palma (the capital of Mallorca). They definitely have a great night life, but we weren’t really feeling in the clubbing mood. We were still getting adjusted to the time difference and knew we would be going out in Barcelona (aka beach clubs until the morning and I can’t hang like I used to), so we were saving our energy for that.

Santayí – Es Pontàa

Anyways, the next day our flight to Barcelona wasn’t until later,  so we had some time to explore a bit more.  After relaxing by the hotel pool, we decided to drive down to Santanyí to see Es Pontàs, which is a natural arch in the water, on the southeastern part of the island. And like everything else, it was beautiful.

We went to one last beach and then it was time to start heading to the airport. We drove through another adorable town, Ses Salines, and of course, made us pull over to walk around.

Ses Salines – see! it’s cute!

Where We Ate

Pastelería Ca’n Molinas in Valldemossa – Spanish cafe. This pastry and coffee shop was so cute (and tasty!) with a pretty, little courtyard in the back.

Restaurante Modigliani in Palmanova – Italian/Mediterranean.  After dinner, we went to a mojito bar and then got some late night gelato.

On our way out to Torrente de Pareis, we stopped at a little market to get some meat, cheese, wine, beer and fruit so we could have a picnic on the beach.

Our last morning, we had breakfast at the hotel’s restaurant (so good + great view) and grabbed more market snacks for our drive back to the airport.

After Mallorca, we flew to Barcelona! I’ll get a post on that trip soon.
